ISN - IBRO Neuroscience School, Fayoum, Egypt. December 2-7, 2009

Held from December 2-7, the School focused upon neuronal cell death mechanisms in a range of disorders including neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimers, Parkinsons, ALS), stroke, and metabolic CNS disorders.
Morning sessions were made up of formal 30 min. lectures and discussions of key topics (apoptosis, necrosis, animal models, neuroprotective strategies) and afternoons were spent in the laboratory facilities (Fayoum University) with laboratory sessions dedicated to basic neuropathology, cell counting, immunohistochemistry, and animal behavior techniques. A total of 31 students were enrolled in the school from 8 African countries. Teaching faculty included Dr. Abdul Mohammed (Kenya & Sweden), Dr. Marina Bentovoglio (Italy), Dr. Vivienne Russell (S. Africa), Dr. Tharcisse Kayenbe (Congo), Dr Howard Cooper (France), Dr Samir Ahboucha (Morocco), in addition to the school organizers.
Following the school, all faculty and students attended the meeting of the Society of Neuroscientists of Africa (SONA) in Sharm-el-Sheikh, Egypt. Funding for the transfer to Sharm-el-Sheikh was provided by SONA and Fayoum University.
