III Neurotoxicity Society Meeting: Neurochemical Mechanisms for Neurodegenerative Disorders
Pucon, Chile, 23-25 March 2007

Dear members of ISN Conference Committee

We would like to express our gratitude to the ISN for supporting “III Neurotoxicity Society Meeting: Neurochemical Mechanisms for Neurodegenerative Disorders” carried out in March 23-25, 2007, Pucón, Chile. In our view and that of all participants, the meeting was complete sucess from several point of view: (i) participation of 30 invited international speakers from the USA, Canada, UK, France, Denmark, Germany, Poland, Australia, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and 11 national speakers (Chile); (ii) we combined basic and clinical aspects, organizing two clinical round tables; (iii) participation of 43 graduate students from Chile, other Latinamerican countries including, Cuba, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Peru and USA with poster presentations and 6 oral presentations; (iv) participation of 32 students in the course “Neurochemical & Cellular Mechanisms of Neuronal Damage, Therapeutical Approaches” March 21-25; (v) two educational lecture about how to write a successful grant application and how to write a scientific publication; (vi) successful guided poster sessions with excellent presentations and discussions; (vii) excellent and depth discussions after presentations; (v) establishment of several collaborations between laboratories from Latinamerica with groups in the USA and Europe; (vi) planning of the IV Neurotoxicity Society meeting in 2009, to be held in Argentina.

It is important to note that all international invited speakers cover travel costs to Chile with their own funds. This meeting also provided a unique opportunity to graduate students and young scientists from Chile and other Latinoamerica countries to participate and discuss their research work in an international meeting with leaders of the field. This is particularly relevant, considering the unlikely possibility for graduate students or junior scientists to travel to international conferences from Latinamerica to Europe or USA due to high cots. It is therefore critical to continue to carry out this meeting, either in Chile or in other Latiamerican countries.

The meeting was composed by (i) 36 25-min presentations followed by 5-min discussions; (ii) 45 poster presentations; (iii) 1 plenary lecture; (iv) 6 oral presentations by graduate students; (v) 4 guided poster sesions (vi) 2 clinical round tables (Alzheimer and Parkinson´s disease) composed of the presentation of differential diagnosis and treatment, followed by general discussions; (vii) a Ph.D. course of Faculty of Medicine, University of Chile entitled Neurochemical & Cellular Mechanisms of Neuronal Damage, Therapeutical Approaches; (viii) the biennal meeting of Neurotoxicity Society. The total number of participants was 101. We supported 38 students with fellowship which covered their accomoddation and meals. The support from ISN (13.000 US$) and CAEN-ISN (2500 US$) were used to cover a part of meeting cost of students accommodation and meals and accomodation of invited speakers). The list student, who get felloship, was announced in our webpage nts.med.uchile.cl/2007/ under the link Felloship Recipients and this information was included in the abstract book which will be publishend in the journal Neurotoxicity Reserach.
