In
Memoriam It is with sadness that we report the untimely passing of Professor Ch.R.K. Murthy on December 1, 2003. At the time of his death Professor Murthy was on the faculty of the School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad, India. In January of 2004 he would have assumed the Deanship of the School of Life Sciences. He leaves behind his wife Jayasree and daughter Kalpana. Professor Murthy was highly regarded as a teacher, and as an accomplished neuroscientist and neurochemist. He made numerous contributions in the field of cerebral energy metabolism, as well as in the area of glucose, glutamate and branched-chain amino acid metabolism. He was also well known for his work on the pathogenesis of hepatic encephalopathy and ammonia neurotoxicity. Professor Murthy was a member of IBRO, treasurer of the Neuroscience Society of India, regional secretary of the International Society of Developmental Neurobiology, Member of the Indian Academy of Neuroscience and Member of the International Study Group on Hepatic Encephalopathy and Liver Disorders. He was recently inducted as a Fellow of Indian Academy of Neurosciences as well as the of the Indian National Academy of Science. Professor Murthy touched the lives of numerous students, colleagues and collaborators. He was a kind and gentle man, with an immense fund of knowledge whose wisdom and wit will be sorely missed. |
