Explore the history of ISN Schools that have brought early-career neurochemists together for learning, mentorship, and global scientific exchange

The 2025 ISN Advanced School took place in New York City under the theme “The Aging Brain.” Linked to the ISN-ASN 2025 Meeting, the school gave young neurochemists the opportunity to learn about the latest discoveries, discuss their own research with faculty members, and connect with graduate students and experts from around the world. The programme highlighted ISN’s commitment to advanced training, scientific exchange, and supporting early-career researchers in neurochemistry.
The 5th ISN-JNC Flagship School took place in Naxos, Greece, in 2024 under the theme “Neurochemistry of Mental Illness.” Bringing together around 40 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers from across the world, the school offered an intensive week of advanced lectures, scientific discussions, and poster presentations led by internationally recognised experts in neuroscience and neurochemistry. As part of ISN’s global education programme, the event focused on fostering collaboration, mentorship, and scientific exchange among the next generation of researchers in the field.
The 2023 ISN Advanced School took place in Caminha, Portugal, ahead of the ISN-ESN 2023 Meeting in Porto. Under the theme “New challenges and opportunities in neurochemical studies – novel tools and approaches,” the school brought students and faculty together for three intensive days of lectures, poster sessions, and discussions focused on modern methods in neurochemistry. The programme gave young researchers the chance to explore new scientific tools, share their own work, and connect with experts, ISN leaders, JNC editors, and the Young Scientists Steering Committee.
The 4th ISN-JNC Flagship School took place in Schmerlenbach, Germany, in 2022 under the theme “Brain Metabolism in Health and Disease.” Set in a former convent in the Spessart region near Frankfurt, the week-long school brought together around 40 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers from across the world. The programme explored recent advances in brain metabolism, from basic cellular mechanisms to changes linked with neurological disease, while also offering training in good scientific practice, statistics, manuscript writing, peer review, and publishing.
