Professor Amadi Ogonda Ihunwo is the Head of School of Anatomical Sciences, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He holds the BMedSc (Hons), MSc, PhD degrees. A former Associate Dean, Faculty of Medicine at Mbarara University of Science & Technology, Mbarara, Uganda, Immediate Past Secretary General/CEO, Society of Neuroscientists of Africa (SONA; 2017-2021) and Chair Governing Council (SONA). Professor Ihunwo is the founder of the Brain Wellness Initiative (BWI), a non-profit organization.
Professor Ihunwo is an active member of ISN and has organized and facilitated Advanced Neuroscience Schools/Workshops co-sponsored by ISN. He has participated in several ISN congresses and served previously on the ISN-CAEN Committee, School Initiative Committee and Program Committee for the 2019 ISN/ASN Congress in Montreal, Canada. He organized an ‘ISN Symposium’ during the 14th International Conference of the Society of Neuroscientists of Africa (SONA)/Annual Meeting of the Neuroscience Society of Nigeria (NSN) in Lagos, Nigeria. He was involved in organizing the 15th International Conference of SONA at Accra, Ghana in 2021 and the 16th International Conference of SONA in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2023. Professor Ihunwo’s research interest is in comparative Adult Neurogenesis and Gliogenesis on adult brains of mammalian and avian species including the factors that can affect such processes. He was a Principal Investigator under the Switzerland-South Africa Joint Research Programme (SSAJRP) from 2009-2014. He was the Chair of the Travel Award Committee for the 2021 and 2023 ISN Congresses and currently a Councillor and chair of the Child Care Fellowship. Professor Ihunwo’s vision as a Councillor is to drive the ISN mission on the African continent and increase interactions for our young and vibrant colleagues among themselves with a possibility of an African Society for Neurochemistry (AfrSN), and networking and collaborations with ISN membership globally.
