JNC-ISN Trainee Merit Award & Fundamental Neurochemistry Reviews

Trainee Merit Awards

These competitive awards will be given to graduate students or postdocs up to 5 years since receiving a PhD and who are first authors of reviews in the Journal of Neurochemistry. Up to $700 USD will be reimbursed to cover costs for participation in a Neurochemistry or Neuroscience meeting (including virtual meetings) for trainees presenting their work as a poster or oral communication. Applications can be made on a rolling basis and must be submitted within one year from the initial online publication date of the review article. In December of each calendar year, all applications will be assessed. In accordance with the JNC and ISN values, authors from under-represented communities are particularly encouraged to apply. Any Neuroscience meeting in the areas of research covered by the Journal of Neurochemistry is eligible, however preference will be given to ISN meetings, Sister Society (ASN, ESN, APSN) meetings or other ISN-sponsored meetings. Trainees should acknowledge this award in their presentation and any original research publication related to the data. This award cannot be combined with any other financial ISN support.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Graduate students and postdocs up to 5 years after the year their doctoral degree was awarded (at the time of application, taking into account career interruption)
  • Sole first author of a review accepted or published in the Journal of Neurochemistry
  • Online publication date of the review is less than 1 year prior to application

Application must contain:

Submit your application documents to jnc-ce@florey.edu.au

Selection Process:

The award is competitive, and recipients will be selected by the Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of JNC in consultation with the Reviews board. Applications will be evaluated based on scientific merit and adherence to application requirements. Consideration will also be given to the potential impact of the award on the recipient. Applicants are encouraged to include a statement in their application if they face any unseen barriers that this award could help address or mitigate.

Fundamental Neurochemistry Reviews

This category of reviews encourages students and early-career postdocs to write first-author reviews that provide advanced information on Neurochemical Topics. The Journal of Neurochemistry invites trainees (graduate students and postdocs within 5 years of their higher degree) who have already made important contributions to one of the topics below to write a review with their mentor(s). The first author of a Fundamental Neurochemistry Review that receives final acceptance for publication will automatically receive a JNC-ISN Trainee Merit Award, assuming they fulfill the eligibility criteria. The award will reimburse up to $700 USD to defray costs for participation in a Neurochemistry or Neuroscience meeting (including virtual meetings) for trainees presenting their work as first authors in a poster or oral communication.

Topics for Fundamental Neurochemistry Reviews include but are not limited to:

Synaptic transmission and cellular communication

  • Synaptic vesicles and large dense-core vesicles
  • Synaptic transmission
  • Axonal transport
  • Synaptic plasticity
  • Glutamatergic neurotransmission
  • GABAergic and glycinergic neurotransmission
  • Monoaminergic neurotransmission
  • Cholinergic neurotransmission
  • Peptides and neurotransmission
  • Co-transmission
  • Diffusible neurotransmitters
  • Gliotransmission in health and disease

Cell signalling

  • Receptors and neurochemistry
  • Neuroendocrine signalling
  • Neurochemistry of lipids
  • Mitochondrial function and dysfunction

Genetics and biochemistry

  • Structural neurochemistry

Clinical aspects and technology advances in neurochemistry

  • Clinical neurochemistry including: neurochemistry of psychiatric diseases; neurochemistry of neurodevelopmental diseases; neurochemistry of dementias
  • Technology advances in neurochemistry (e.g. new modalities of imaging in neurochemistry; new developments in genetic manipulation; brain on a chip)

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Graduate students and postdocs up to 5 years after the year the higher degree was awarded (at the time of application, taking into account career interruption)

Application must contain:

  • Proposal document with the title of the Review and a short description of the article layout (maximum 400 words)
  • A short CV (maximum 2 pages including a list of publications)
  • A letter of support from the mentor confirming their status as article co-author

Submit your application documents to jnc-ce@florey.edu.au

Selection Process:

Applications will be evaluated based on the applicant’s resume, as well as the topic of the proposed review and its novelty and depth of analysis.

Accepted proposals will have 6 months from acceptance date to submit their review article. Articles submitted as Fundamental Neurochemistry Reviews will undergo the same rigorous peer-review process as other review categories.
