ISN Treasurer Candidate: Vladimir Parpura

Vladimir Parpura, MD (University of Zagreb, Croatia), PhD (Iowa State University, ISU, USA), is a member of APSN and, since January 1, 2023, Distinguished Professor, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, China. He held faculty appointments at ISU, University of California Riverside and The University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA; and University of Rijeka, Croatia. He was elected as a member of Academia Europaea and a Fellow of American Physiological Society. He discovered the astrocyte-neuron glutamate-mediated signaling pathway; i.e., gliotransmission. This led to the concept of the tripartite synapse.

Parpura has a long-standing history of active involvement in the activities of ISN and its sister societies. He was the 25th ASN President; he signed the first memorandum of understanding between ISN and ASN in an effort to build stronger ties between sister societies. Parpura served on the ISN Council and 6 committees, chaired ISN Conference Committee, and served on Task Force that developed strategies for reaching underrepresented neurochemistry communities. He is presently co-editing a special issue of the Journal of Neurochemistry (JNC) entitled “Neuroscience in China.” He co-organized an ISN satellite meeting, served on 3 program committees of, and (co)chaired 6 sessions and gave 13 talks at ISN meeting/schools (some co-joint events with ESN or APSN) held in China, Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Mexico, Argentina, Australia, USA, Japan and Canada. He is on editorial boards of 16 non-competing journals to JNC, while he competed his work with competing ASN Neuro. He edited 20 books, volumes and series.

Parpura has successfully worked as a scientist having active laboratories on not one but three continents/regions of ISN and having positive experience and connections with all sister societies. He would like to serve as an ISN Treasurer to promote neurochemistry worldwide and serve all neurochemists around the globe independent of their geopolitical and/or other orientations.
